I'm just about to upgrade from 10.2.8 to Panther. I've done the permission repairs. Went into single user mode to do fsck and got 2 things that don't seem to be what the book says. (I know nothing about Unix - just following instructions). Instead of localhost#, I got sh-2.05a#, fsck -y didn't work, I was told by the system to use fsck -f. That resulted in
Invalid extent entry (4,8756) ** Volume check failed.
What's up?
Can I proceed "safely"?

First, the "sh-2.05a#" is the usual single-user command prompt. Secondly, if your drive was journaled in 10.2, run fsck with both the -y and -f tags.
Try: /sbin/fsck -yf
If it still fails to fix the "invalid extent entry," its DiskWarrior time.

Heck just skip the previous step and just jump to Diskwarrior

That would be the simple thing to do.

LOL. Well if he can just backup, reformat and install 10.3 That would be even more simple to do.

What guarantee is there that Disk Warrior would fix the problem?
I have data backups on idisk, iPod and DVD using Backup.
BTW /sbin/fsck -yf didn't work.

Odds are pretty good DiskWarrior will fix that. If not, a nuke-and-pave certainly will.
Backup all data, wipe, install, re-create user account, then replace data from backups.
Don't forget your email and bookmarks!

if your 'puter's a few years old, make sure your firmware is up-to-date
it's on the Jaguard CD and can only be done while booted in OS9 (for some stoopid reason)
i had to go back and re-install OS9, then run Jaguar's firmware updater just to get my new ext.HD to mount in Panther
