Just wondering how many others have done the same thing--given up on Panther and gone back to 10.2.8? In my case there were a few crucial problems. First and foremost was printing. Some documents that printed fine from 10.2.8 just wouldn't print at all from 10.3.3. Next was the unpredictability of USB pen drives--sometimes they would mount, sometimes not. Also, the new security release definitely lead to some instability. Also, going back to Jag, its nice not to have the ugly boxes anymore when you highlight things.

I found Jaguar usable, but felt I was giving up on a lot of the usability back from the Classic days and felt a need to use Haxies like WindowShade, FuitMenu, etc.
Panther is the first version of Mac OS X that I love right out of the box without any third party stuff and find much better usability and ease of use then Classic had, especially since they fixed the networking in 10.3.3.
No way that I would ever go back. I do also own an older Powerbook without built in USB ports so it is stuck at Jaguar. It is just used for a Jukebox and a few other things, but every time I have to do something with it I realize just how much better Panther is. I really miss the Finder's sidebar.
I can't say that I'm having any problems at all with Panther. I'm also reasonable for a bunch of Macs at my accounts and Panther gives far less problems, almost none at all, then Jaguar ever did.

Try XpostFacto to get Panther to install on your older Powerbook.

I've actually downloaded XpostFacto and looked at it, but was afraid that if I used it to install Panther on this machine it would cause a bunch of hassles. The Powerbook, it's a 266 Wallstreet, is mostly just a Jukebox permanently hooked into my home stereo system. I have been finding other uses for it too like hooking a home security cam to it and running an FTP server on it. Actually it is pretty amazing how useful it still is.

To be honest, the only time I feel like going back to Jaguar is when trying to browse network volumes (and no, the .3 update didn't help that much). Other than that, Panther is definitely an improvement.

I'd almost bet money that you're the only person going from 10.3 back to 10.2. When (if) you decide to try Panther again, make sure to do an "archive and install" rather than an upgrade install. You're problems will probably be gone.

I bought 10.3 stand alone new box version. Then I erased the hard drive on my iBook G3 700, so it was a completely clean install.

BTW, others have complained about my second two complaints--it seems to be widely known that Panther can have troubles with pen drives and others have said they really don't like the boxes around selected items. But I'd live with these. Its really the first that is the worst. Certain tightly formatted one-page Word documents just won't print to either my LaserJet 2100M or 1220. But the same docs print just fine in 10.2.8. And no one seems to be able to explain where the problem lies. So I finally just had to give up on Panther because these docs are the mainstay of my work.

I don't really care to be honest. Both have their goods and bads:
Jaguar = The annoying fsck system that LOVES to randomly kick in at startup and take 15 minutes or more scanning your hard drive while leaving the computer in limbo.
Panther = Has problems with stuck processes, the annoying keyboard %03 character bug, and worst of all the stupid lookupd crash problem.
Oh yeah and that horrid excuse for an AIM program iChat 2 point oh. 2.1 is a bit better except it's trigger happy with the stupid "You've sent too many messages too quickly!" error..

I installed Panther on the iBook. I can't be bothered going back to Jag, but I decided not to install Panther on any of my other machines. They all run Jag.
On the Panther machine, I run PathFinder instead of Finder.

I've alway's had printing issues with OSX, but it only had to do with excel and then certain spreadsheets that originated from the pc. As for the USB pen drives, I have a maxtor thumb drive and that seems to work like a charm.
Panther seems to work well for me, though I really hadn't notcied a huge increase in spead, but then I use it mostly for office apps and internet so I really don't do heavy lifting.

I would take that bet, as I am considering going back myself,
And I did a complete zero and restart from scratch install. Little things keep niggling away at me - especially the annoying hanging disconnect that has resurfaced.

I use iChat 2.1 on a regular basis and find it fits my needs. I have no major problems with it, but I don't send many files or do much more then... ummm... chat.
I like Panther enough to say I would recommend it for just about anyone. The value outweighs the issues.

fsck doesn't kick in randomly. It kicks in when your disks are corrupted in some way. If you get a kernel panic or shut the machine down uncleanly (say, hold power button for 6 seconds), you WILL get this -- fsck needs to clean house. It's how UNIX works, if you don't have a journaled file system. 10.3 has the same issues, if you don't use HFS+ (journaled) on a drive. Don't blame the OS for your errors.
Stuck process? What are you talking about? And I've hever had lookupd crash so I don't know what you're referring to.
As for AIM... I use iChat all day and it works fine. Well, save 2.1 which keeps giving me "you're sending data too fast" when I type 5 responses in 30 seconds :/

I've all but forgotten about Jaguar on my systems.
We did recently just roll out Mac OS X to our (approx 1000) Macs and they are all, with a few exceptions, running Jaguar. Of course once we get or 10.3 image finalized we'll have to go around and upgrade everyone to Panther…
fun stuff

LOL. Yeah. We had started the roll-out last September and I was already bitching that 10.3 was coming, why not wait etc. Oh, well. Job security
WizOSX -- I'm curious as to why you selectively left out the , which undoubtedly changes the overall tone, in Dave Sorel's post.

Just sloppy cut and paste. However, I'm still not sure what his point was. There have been lots of complaints about Panther along the same lines as mine. Overall, Panther is great, but not for everything. And that's got nothing to do with the computer skills of the user.

I wouldn't go back to Jag, but then the only problem I've experienced with Panther is the disappearing .pdf trick:
If I take a screen capture, 2 out of 10 times the pdf will appear on the desktop, then seconds later disappear completely. I've seen this on a G5 and a G4. Very strange.
Other than that the sailing has been good.

Yep
OK, taken in the proper spirit. I like the headphones (or ears) that the little guy is wearing in the quotes. Never noticed that before.
