Howdy,

I've got a Powerbook G4 1.25ghz 15" Albook, and my hotkeys (brightness, volume, backlight) sometimes has a massive delay.

That is, I'll push to turn the volume down, and sometimes it'll happen straight away, but at other times it may take up to a few minutes until it actually happens.

I haven't tried reinstalling OS X (haven't got time to reload all my applications), but I'm pretty sure it's a software issue. The machine works fine, otherwise.

Any clues?

Cheers

It's never taken minutes for me, but even the delays in the 5-10 second range feel really crappy. What's up with operating systems getting so complex that even the simplest of actions are unresponsive like this?

What's especially irritating is if I'm in low light conditions, and I want to turn my brightness down, I'll hit the key a few times then realise it's not working. It may take a while to kick in, and it can sometimes go right down so there's *no* backlight.

Trying to turn it back up sometimes takes minutes, and often I end up powering down the machine. It's irritating as hell, especially if you're in the middle of working on something.

It's not nessecarily always when CPU usage is high, either; but things like this should be completely independent of the OS. If it's a userspace process, it should have a realtime proritory.

can't say why the brightness keys are doing it. But after a while the audio bus will go to sleep. Then you adjust the volume it'll take a couple seconds to wake back up

This is a problem starting with Panther (that I know of) for some machines, PB 17" Rev A here.

I've noticed this will happen if you increase or decrease the brightness rapidly (usually by holding the key down), there will be a few second delay, and the system will become less responsive to mouse clicks (similar delay), etc. Logging off and on again gets you out of that state. Chances of this happening seem to increase if your machine has just come out of sleep.

I have not noticed this with the volume control though.

10.3.4 out soon?

That happens to me too. I HATE it. And on desktops the audio does NOT shut off.

I've NO delay on 10.3.2 on my TiBook, so sounds like this may be machine dependent.
Time to report as bug? http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/

Meanwhile, for the VOLUME effect, is it a temp workaround to check "show volume in menu bar" in Sound pref panel? (or does that also suffer a delay?)

One thing that bugs the hell out of me is the unresponsiveness of the volume menu item. You have to go really slow and move it otherwise it won't follow your mouse. This seems to occur since it only tracks the mouse when you are on the control.
