Starting yesterday morning. my Safari began freezing. Didn't matter what webpage I was on, it would just freeze and even Force Quit didn't work. Then last night my entire Mac began freezing no cursor movement, no clock ticking nothing. Everytime I would have to do a hard restart.

I have emptied Safari's cache and deleted it's history and preferences. I don't have any of the Safari hacks installed. I have repaired permissions from Disk Utility and separately from my emergency boot drive. I have spent several hours today doing a complete repair and optimization with TTP 4.0.2. I rebuilt the directories and defragmented all my drives.

I have installed a new hard drive last week but it isn't my boot drive. The ram has been in the Mac for awhile and came from an eMac before that so I am pretty sure it is safe. I haven't installed any software or hardware in at least a week, the only thing that has been done is the Airport Update.

Even as I typed this, the entire system froze again and I had to force restart. Any suggestions?

Can you boot off an external FireWire drive and/or CD to see if the system freezes still?

I booted off my emergency boot drive which is on a secondary internal drive and it ran all day with TTP 4 doing its work and no problems. I also booted off the system CD to run disk repairs and no problems.

That's a good thing then....do ALL users on the machine have this problem? If you only have one user set-up, try adding another and see how things go...

I am the only user, I could add another user but that will have to wait until next week because I need this one running all day and don't have time to duplicate everything under another name.

Again, the 2 of the 3 RAM chips are from my eMac which was also running Panther and the eMac never had a problem. I have had the Quicksilver for about 2 months now with the RAM in it and this is the first problem I have had at all.

I decided to find a thorough RAM tester. It seems this one http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14004 is the only RAM checker out there for OSX but it comes highly recommended. Problem is, there is NO instructions on how to use it.

Anyone know how to use it?

i would just switch to a new user without transferring all your stuff (indeed a pain) first. see if safari runs normally there. if it does, it's likely some pref or cache or file or app from your other user is causing grief. just go to accounts in sys prefs, add a new user as 'test' and you can easily delete it later. it should run on same IP settings and all that good stuff. a great way to eliminate possible bugs.

i have had nonstop probs with safari, finally went to firefox because someone said it's faster (not my experience). cocktail or similar chron programs also seem to help a lot. you might try that too before pulling more clumps of hair out.

good luck.
I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are
missing.
