I tried to delete four .pdf files by dragging them to the trash can. Instead of hitting the trash, the four icons ended up on the dock between the trash and the Apple-Mac OSX icon.
When I did a find, it did not show the files on the hard drive. When I looked in the trash they were there. So I emptied the trash. The files are gone but the icons are still on the dock.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the icons?
Thanks,
LeonD

Doesn't a simple drag away from the Dock and drop remove them? You'll probably find that when you click them, a question mark will appear over the icon indicating that the original item cannot be found.
If that fails and you really can't get rid of them, you can edit or delete the com.apple.dock.plist file from your ~/Library/Preferences folder (deleting will revert the Dock to its default set-up so you will lose all customisations you have performed to it).

Based on your suggestion, I was all set to delete the .plist file. Just for yucks, I tried dragging the icon again. I got a pop up that said Show In Finder. Once I got the pop up, I couldn't do anything with the icon.
Next, I must have spazzed out, because I dragged before the pop up came up. And the icon moved!
So, you can move an icon before the pop up comes up. Once it comes up, all you can do is what's on the pop up.
Thanks for the help,
LeonD

Just grab the icon on the dock and drag it to your desktop and it should disappear in a puff of smoke. It really is that simple.
