Hello

I have a G4 dual with 4 drive bays. Fry's in the SF bay area has an rebate deal on Hitachi/IBM ATA/100 HD's 250GB for a final price of about $120.

I bought two. do I need to put the OS X on my eventual boot HD from scratch or can I simply copy the current boot ( 80 GB drive partitioned into three partitions) boot parition 20GBs

I know under OS 9 the advice was to always start from scratch. Although that will take me some time to do, with APPS, MAIL forlders etc what the view under OS X for t his?

thanks rotuts

unhook old HD so it's safe. Plug in new HD, install OS from scratch.

Now, hook up the new HD so that you have both up at the same time (the only reason to unplug is to keep any complications from happening and wiping your HD).

The only folders you'll need are /Applications and your user folder. Drag them over and replace the current ones, you'll probably need to authenticate and that should be it

IMHO you might want to copy over the /Library folder as well, since stuff like photoshop uses that.

Hi, I do this often using Carbon Copy Cloner found at :
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13260
The advantage for me is that I have a mirror image of my original partition or HD on the new drive, so I start from where I left off. It is seemless, nothing more to do.

I don't think the IDE controller in your computer will be able to address all 250GBs, you might put them in and they might show up as only 130
