Ok, I'm on Jaguar and have two files which I began to download (which were .AVIs) and they both failed. As I tried to move them to the trash, i keep getting a message that says:

"The item '.avi' is being used by another task right now. (Other tasks include moving, copying, or emptying the Trash.)

Try again when the other task is complete."

I have no idea what else is using it and as a result, it wont allow me to delete it. The icons (which are of the Internet Explorer icon with a download progress bar) seem permanently stuck on my desktop. How do I rid it of this? It's driving me crazy.

In the Terminal type:

rm

with a space at the end (ie. "rm " without the quotes) then drag the file into the Terminal window and press return (if you see the path is correct).
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

The rm command will remove (delete) files. Dragging the file into the Terminal window will add the path to the file. So you are removing the file using the Terminal.
rm doesn't care about the in use flag and other stuff. It deletes without asking questions. So be careful when using it.

I think there's a program on VersionTracker called "Force Delete" that will do the same thing as the rm command, for those who don't like to use the Terminal.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
