hello

a week ago i wanted to install panther and was very disappointed:
while booting from the install cd first all looks ok (grey screen with the apple logo) but then the display switched for a second to a black screen and told then "OUT OF SCAN RANGE"
because the error message looked like a message from the monitor, i tried to connect a other monitor. and all worked right. connecting the old monitor (sony trinitron 17", about 8 years old, max resolution: 1024x768 at 75 Hz and millions of colors) after installing worked too.
dose apple change to a resolution higher then 1024x768? can i change this on the installation cd?

In all my installs of panther, the max res was 1024x768, and I've never had any issues.

Probably not the resolution that is being changed, more likely it is using a refresh rate that your monitor cannot handle at that resolution.

Most likely the monitor was incorrectly reporting to the Mac that it supported a high resolution or refresh rate.

maybe you are right RayX, if i change to 1024x768 with 85 Hz i get the out of scan range message too and 1152x870 with 60 Hz works but no higer refresh rate.
but doese anyone know if i can tell the install cd that it shoud boot with 1024x768 at 75 Hz or less?
