I'm very frustrating with file sharing with my sister's computer. She lives in California and I live in other end, Connecticut. Sometimes we want to send each other large files. We tried to do the "file sharing' with our afp://ip numbers to each other and nothing seems work? Is there anything that we're missing???? We really want to get connected from computer to computer so that way we can drag files in each other's DROP BOX. get me?
Or if any of you willing to help me out step by step- that'd be GREAT.
Thanks in advance.

If I were you, I would set up a private ftp or webdav server. It'll be a lot easier that way. I've never been a fan of Apple's protocol.

Yeah we already did that.. But remember when you're trying to send a LARGE file. It takes forever on ichat.. We're looking for something quicker like "drag and drop" in another computer with file sharing... get me?
Thanks

either way it'll take the same amount of time. the time it takes relies on the speed of your connections, not the program used. Now, there could be other reasons why you don't want to use iChat (maybe you don't want to leave it on all the time) but in general it makes no difference what method you use to transfer files.

Use the built in webserver. If the files you want to swap are secretive, stuff them with a password.

Unfortunately, you're going to be limited by bandwidth no matter what protocol you use. Some protocols, due to their design, can eke out a little more transfer speed from the same bandwidth, but the difference is generally far less than one kilobyte per second; hardly enough to consider any real advantage.

Unless your bandwidth is shaped by a packetshaper. So, if one of you utilizes a college internet connection, using ftp or http will probably be much faster than iChat.

If using the Airport Base Station (or other router), you need to set up port forwarding. (Read here.)

have you actually turned on file sharing on both computers? You didn't specify if you'd done that (ie, in System Preferences, Sharing)
