I was wondering it was possible to change my shortname in panther. Im talking about the short name that I chose on installation of panther. When I go to sys prefs>account my short name is greyed out and I can't change it. Is it possible to change it? Or would I have to reinstall panther to do this?

I believe that the shortname for your first account (the one you create when you first install OS X or startup a new Mac) cannot be changed. All other accounts can.

Why do you want to change your short name?

You can do this with Utilities->NetInfo Manager. Click the lock and authorize, then click on "users" in the list, select your account and change your name, your home folder etc. Remeber to rename the home folder in the Finder, too, or you'll get a lot of problems. Don't touch the other settings. Log out and in again. Remeber that the short name may not contain spaces or special characters and may not be longer than 8 letters.

There is a utility for Panther that can do this for you. I believe it is called Accounts Enhancer:

You can SERIOUSLY hose your system messing around in NetInfo Manager if you do not know what you are doing.

edit: Looks like Accounts Enhancer has its problems as well.

Doesn't look like it's been updated for Panther but this may be of some help:

Then there's Apple's method:

Good luck.

If you don't know what you're doing (and to be blunt, if you're even asking, that means you don't really understand the mechanics of what you're asking), then the ONLY way you even want to attempt this is by carefully following Apple's documentation:
