I have an external hard drive connected via a USB interface run OsX on a iMAC.

The problem is that the drive was working fine and then it started reporting errors with the volume (which is where I came in)and the user could not read the volume anymore.

The errors are as follows:
With fsck_hfs -d /dev/rdisk1s9
* Block # 5973158 is not embedded alternate Volume header
* Block # 5973162 is not embedded primary volume header
checking HFS+ Volume
(-1,0)
IVCHK
- Volume header total allocated is greater than device size.
- Volume Allocatio block count 39072726 device allocation block count 39072498 (about a 3GB diff)

Vol Check Failed with 7 errors
- Volume type is embedded HFS+
- Primary MDB is at block 2
- alt MDB is at block 312579982 (beyond the physical disk)
- Primary VHB is at block 24466
- Alt VHB is at block 320168910 (beyond the physical disk)
- Sector Size 512
- volume object flag 0x1B
- total Sector for Volume 312579984
- total Sector for embedded volume 320144448

Also Norton Disk Doc reports similiar errors.

I was hoping that there is a way to rebuild compile/build the MDB or the VHB without wiping out the data.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DiskWarrior 3 is the best tool for these sorts of problems.

For your data's sake, put your Norton Disk Doctor Kevorkian (thanks as usual, CharlesS!) in the trash.

And don't take it back out later!

Meanwhile, get and use DiskWarrior as CatOne said.
