I'm sure it can be done better than that

This is stupid.

Man, what's wrong with you guys? I thought it was clever.

And to the poster above me, it's not implying that OS X came from Windows. It's saying that OS X is more "evolved" (as in, better) than Windows.

It's wrong though...the transition between Windows and OS X should have been:

Shouldn't it be from XP -> OS X if we're going by what's recent... or 98 -> OS 9.

I don't like to think of Windows being in the same gene pool as the Mac OS. If anything, Windows was an off shoot on the evolutionary chain of OS's. It is a freak of evolution, one that deserves to be extinguished for the good of all OS life.

This evolution stuff is nonsense.
On the 4th day, God created Lisa. On the 5th, Macintosh. On the 6th, OSX. On the 7th, he downloaded Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" from the iTunes Music Store.

You can't create that directory without root. Root has an up-front one time installation charge of $3.56...please forward that via PayPal...

Yeah, that's true, but the major problem is, it doesn't feel like OS X. I went through a phase of trying out themes, and stuff on XP for a while, and loaded up with a ton of tols to make it look like OS X, but they all feel gadgy.

Sevreal things the themes can't really mimc, is OS X's use of double buffering for graphics, and all the other little nuances we get from actually using OS X.

that doesn't make XP a lesser expereince when using it, but rather how XP doe things should be left as it is, until MS start to incorporate technology like that in OS X.

If you can, check out Longhorn, it's pretty damn cool so far, without all the new tech inside it yet.

There's quite a number of things; from the GUI perspective, the navigation tools to browse your folders are really a move forward, going back to XP, or OS X makes one miss them. The sidebar, I can't do without it, even though in Longhorn it's not fully implemented, you can et sidebar tools for XP, which really show you how powerful it can be.
In the one bar, you can have virtually anything you need quick access to, such as launchnig apps, msn messenger, notepads, diaries, system information at a glance, web searchers, in fact pretty much anything.

That's just 2 of the things so far, but under the hood, lots of the new tech wil really shine when they implement it.

Mods, please lock this thread or move it to the lounge as it seems to be evolving into a discussion about Windows.

Not sure how any of the things you've mentioned is a raving must have. Technological LH will probably bring Windows forwards, but hearing someone talking about its GUI like it's a revolutionary thing doesn't really fit. Going from 3.11 to 95 was a huge step, but so far LH seems to be more of a patch work than anything. It's just not in MS interest to make any radical changes to the direction they are heading. They are to conservative for that. I predict the LH GUI to be an evolution of XP, even thought they have years left to polish something new.

True, and the things I mentioned are just some of the visual cues that I thought I'd mention, but they go far deeper than what I said.

LH is a big departure in the navigation systems compared to other versions of Windows, and OS X. It's hard to explain, but it incorporates things like the shelf from NeXT, and other nice addons.

I'm not even hinting on the underlying components since they aren't in current builds. So, from what I've used of LH, it's quite a major leap forward in terms of the GUI's navigation services compared to other OS' out there

So it really is a big departure, and a very welcome one. This coming week is Winhec, so we'll be seeing a newer build of LH.

Well I most certainly don't buy the hype. I don't belive some of the features that are going to be added are result of user feedback. LH will make windows a more isolated platform than it already is. I don't like the direction MS is going with LH. But yes, from a technical perspective it'll be interesting to see what is coming, no doubt. But it's silly to tout hype when we all know that MS notorious promise more than they can keep in front of every OS release. Sure most OS vendors including Apple does it, but MS is the worst of the bunch.

BTW: This is the Mac OS X forum - perhaps not the political correct place to have this discussion.

Yeah, I thought so too, but I guess I must have got a little confused since the topic was about OS X, and Windows, but hey, I might get it right next time.

No problem. I too look forward to read about new impressive builds of LH if there is something like that coming. Not because I care about LH, but because it's interesting from a technical perspective. But you know touting windows on a mac forum, is just as bad as touting mac on a windows forum, even when you are in to something or not. So be gentle.

hehe, I know, it's a careful path to tread. Personally, I like both OS', having to decent offerings just means there's more toys to play with.

Although the image does kinda imply that (with the ape -> man thing above the image). I'm quite happy to just go along with your description though.
