I just got the CSI Season 3 dvds and the second I load the episode list on the dvds the player crashes. I booted back into OS9 and it played fine, same with my friend's PC. The DVD player was the only open app on the Powerbook at the time. Anyone else have DVD player crash on them or any ideas?

try rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist in Terminal, and then try DVDPlayer again.

failing that, do you have Xcode installed? if so, are things up to date? i had a machine refuse to use DVDPlayer in OS X, yet it would play in OS 9. i tracked the problem down to out-of-date Dev Tools (as it was known then).

No Xcode or dev tools installed. Trashed prefs didn't fix prob.

Edit:
Crash report states:
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x485e000

VLC gives the same result. Crash at menu screen.

I tested the disc on a few machines running panther. On the laptops it crashed but on the tower it worked fine. I haven't figured out why yet.

That's a strange problem, hawk. Let us know if you discover anything else.
