I don't know when this happened, but certainly in 10.3.3 it looks as though CUPS is now password protected. From the administration pages (http://localhost:631/) it is impossible to perform any administration functions without authenticating. Trouble is, I can't figure out what the Name and Password are. Certainly my admin account name and password don't work. Any ideas?

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Well thank you very much. I checked the admin manual but I guess I didn't check well enough. I guess I'll have go enable the root account and try again.

Yes. Apparently the root account has to be enabled to get to the admin functions. Now it works.

This is going to catch everybody. They should really have a direct link to this bit of info (not just the manual) on the main page.

A classic example of the unix world's focus on user experience.

You're right. I think they added this in the April security update, and it does make sense because not only does it lock people out of the web admin pages, but I think it secures the CUPS from the command line too. I can only imagine admins trying to do anything from the web interface. Normal people will use Printer Setup Utility. In this case, I was trying to experiment with the class feature.

Apple ought to put out a knowledgebase article.

Thank You!
And I second the thought for a KBase article.
