I just saw this article on google news. under the heading MS reveals Longhorn features.

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,116005,00.asp

The funny thing is that this OS won't come out until 2006, and the "new features" they brag about are already in OSX with bluetooth / address book / iCal / iChat / iSync. And you know that whenever Lonhorn is released these features will be implemented so poorly it will be too hard to set up, and either be too in your way or go unused.

I wish more people knew how great OSX already is and would free themselves from XP slavery.

"As a result, the company is asking cell phone manufacturers to begin implementing the necessary changes now to make their products play well with Longhorn later."

what does that mean? is bluetooth not good enough? it has to be microsoft-bluetooth?

Well, I can rule out Samsung as a purchase option.

I think they're in the process of making WMA an official standard, though I don't recall what standards body is handling it.

That said, I'm unfamiliar with what these WMA enabled DVD players do, but if they let you play data CDs containing protected WMA files, Apple needs to start doing the same thing...

For now, Windows Media is the only way to get HD DVD content. It's not important to most people, but for those of us with HDTV sets, it's very cool. I don't know if that's what you saw, though.

I didn't see this article posted anywhere on the forums. If it has been I apologize:

It looks like Longhorn is going to be a bigger resource hog than OSX. At least with OSX I can still enjoy the GUI for most most part even on my iMac 350. Granted it doesn't have QE but the GUI is still there. It looks like Windows users won't have much of a choice when it comes to older hardware. Back to the GUI of Win 2000. I'll keep OSX.

I was just reading the other day Longhorn is going to require something like a 4GHz processor among other things. If that didn't play Doom 3 at 300fps I think there's a lot of EEs at Intel and AMD that would end up sticking their heads in the ingot heaters.

Yeah but what kind of Mac will OSX circa 2006 run on? Do you really believe they'll support old G3's still?

They already do! Well, it's not really Apple's doing, but almost all new DVD players will play CDs with MPGs on them.
