I installed Security Update 2004-05-03 last night on my Dual G4/500, and am now having massive problems. Most apps (Finder, Safari, iTunes, Web Confidential for starters) crash immediately after launching. Mail seems fine, though, oddly enough. However, any time I try to use the menu bar, the frontmost app crashes. Tried this under multiple users, same result. Deleted prefs, fixed perms, same result.

Any ideas? Any apps that work need to be launched from the command line at this point. Is the Security Update installer stashed on my system somewhere where I can re-run it?

1) Boot from a Panther CD and run Disk Utility, First Aid, Repair Volume
2) Download and reinstall the 10.3.3 combo updater
3) Reboot and run Software Update
4) Repair permissions

I can guarantee that will fix it. ;-)

Running Disk First Aid was unfortunately no help, but re-running the combo installer did the trick! Thanks

I'm glad that worked. Running the most recent combo updater usually fixes really weird problems like yours. Also, in the future, you will have better luck with the combo updates than the incremental updates. So when Apple releases 10.3.4 in a few weeks, I will wait until the combo updater is available and run it, rather than running the incremental updater from Software Update.

Probably something got messed up while redoing the prebinding. In the future, if this happens you can fix it by booting into Single-User Mode (command-S at startup) and typing these commands:

fsck
mount -uw /
update_prebinding -root / -force
reboot

Re-running the combo update works also, since it updates the prebinding at the end.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

According to reports on another website (cough:MacFixit:cough), this problem can also be fixed by deleting all cache files (/System/Library/Caches, /Library/Caches and ~/Library/Caches) and then rebooting.
