This has probably been asked a thousand times--but the search engine in these forums, that won't allow one and two letter search items and quotes, makes it very hard to find out. Anyway:

I've got a Beige G3 with Jaguar (10.2.8) on the first 8gb, os9.1 on the next 8gb. After installing Os9.1 I can't get back to 10. Restart doesn't work, holding down the X key or the option key won't either. I tried reformatting and resintalling everything again, still no go. I can install Jaguar, go up to 10.2.8, install software and Jaguar runs perfectly. But as soon as I install Os9 I can never get back. Even tried installing 9.2.2, still no go. It's driving me nuts.

Have you tried installing in the other order (i.e. install OS 9 and then install OS X)? Don't know that it'll make that much of a difference, but I seem to recall some cases where it did.

Erased the disk again from the Jaguar installer and got Jag going again with no problem. The problem reappears as soon as I install OS 9 again.

I would also like to low level format the hard drive but OS X disk utility doesn't have that as an option and OS 9 disk utility hangs when I try to use it. Suggestions? I don't own any other disk utility products.

Are you selecting the "Update disk drivers" option in the OS 9 install? I would think that's not desirable. No idea if that's actually the problem or not though.

I had this very problem back in the 10.0 days when, after having been in 8.6 I could not get back to 10.0 on my old Lombard. The way I got around this was by using OpenFirmware. If you are willing to reinstall 10.2.8, then format the 10.2.8 partition not forgetting to install Mac OS9 drivers on the 10.2.8 partition. If the OS9 drivers are not installed then OS9 will not see it, I think.

Edit: I forgot that the Beige G3's are OldWorld Macs with no OF.

Uh.

All PCI Macs (All PowerMacs other than 6100/7100/8100 and their variants) have OpenFirmware. Beige G3s just also have the full Mac boot ROM.

Thank, all for the help and suggestions. Here's what I finally did:

Took out all PCI cards and replaced the CDRW with the original CD drive. So everything was back to original state except that I have a 533mh G4 ZIF. Also left in 256mb DIMM, along with 2 32mb originals.

Zero the HD (40gb,IDE) using the 9.2.2 install disk/disk utility. Took about 6 hours, as expected.

Installed 9.2.2 first on a 7.4gb partition. Then installed Jaguar from full install disks.

All is back to normal. However, I have not tried rebooting into OS 9. I guess I'm just a coward, but I don't want to get stuck and have to do this all over again. What does anyone think? One possibility that might have caused the problems going back and forth might have been the CDRW drive. Maybe somehow, although both OS X and OS 9 used it fine as a CD drive before, there were problems rebooting into 9 with it??
