My new panther 10.3.3 17" Powerbook only came with 2 gray OSX system discs in the box (for reinstalling etc) , but I hear about a "third" disc on this forum and in the help center on the mac. The disc seem to be labeled as 1 of 2, 2 of 2.

It only came up because i was trying to get my epson c84 drivers to be recognized as installed and the help center said to reinstall from the third disc. I figured the pritner thing out (choose Epson USB, rather than USB in the menu) but wonder if I am missing a disc.

I bought it from MacConnection and then installed more RAM, but that is all.

Should have at least two more disks, disk 3 and the developer tools.
Take it back to the shop and they should burn you copies.

It's a DVD so you only need one Disc.

Are these 2 disk labeled restore disk? I've read somewhere that new PowerBooks/iBook do not include Panther stand-alone install disks, but only restore disks... that's maybe why you don't have the 3 Panther CDs... (and a 4th one for Developer tools).

ALL recent Macs have included a combined OS X Install/Application Restore/Apple Hardware Test DVD.

If you boot from it by holding C, you go to the OS X installer. If you hold down Option, you can choose between booting from the hard drive, the OS X installer, or Apple Hardware Test. Once you have OS X installed, you run Apple Software Restore from the hard drive, which copies the applications from the DVD.

Presumably the Restore process has grown since the inclusion of GarageBand, hence the second disc.

Retail Panther comes with:
Panther install CD 1
Panther install CD 2
Panther install CD 3
XCode Developer CD

So, fo CDs total, again key being CD, they hold about 650 megs of data.

Since all Powerbooks have a DVD drive, Apple saves money buy not including a ton of CDs.

So, you get:
Powerbook DVD Restore 1
Powerbook DVD Restore 2

DVDs can hold about 4.7 gigs, or 8.4 gigs depending on how they make them. New Powerbooks come with the infomation that the 4 CDs above have, and also have all the iLife data, plus some other applications like Quickbooks. If they had come on CD, your package would have had about 10-12 CDs. I think 2 DVDs will be easier to manage, since in this case, less quanity is better [smile]

I believe all recent Macs come with 2 DVD's. Our G5 came with the same 2 DVD set.

Thanks

Seems like preinstalled Panther Macs have just 2 discs-they do say restore.
