Formatting drive when reinstalling OS X?

	I just reinstalled OS X on my iBook. I told the installer to erase and format the drive. However, it then seemed to only "check" the drive and I don't recall seeing any "formatting" take place. Is there any real need to make sure the drive get's re-formatted before reinstalling OS X? Did the installer format my drive or was it really only "checking" the drive???
