My hard drive is only 10GBs, and I usually only have 1.8GBs free, which is eaten into by my VM swapfiles. The problem is, OS X does not accurately report free drive space in the Finder that is being occupied by the swapfiles. The only way to get an accurate reading is to empty the trash. So is there any terminal command that will display an accurate measurement of free space?

You're saying Panther doesn't include the swapfiles when it reports empty space? I didn't know that.

I does for me... But I guess the problem is that it sometimes takes time for the Finder to realize that the available disk space has changed... so it may actuallyl report non accurate free space. Hopefully this will get fixed along with files which do not appear on the desktop sometimes until you click on the FInder.

Instead of emptying the trash, go to your computer in a Finder window (Shift-Cmd-C) and then double-click on your boot volume's icon.
