Hi.

When i first installed 10.3.0 i turned on filevault. After a while though i got tired of the constant thashing of the HD and what i thought then was a speed hit.
I may be switching office places later this summer and that thought of it protecting my mac from snoopers while i am away is a nice thought.

I was wondering if anyone has turned it it on and still use it today? Has it been improved in 10.3.3?

Thanks.

(i ran it on my dual 2gig)
I don't do video or games or anything other then web dev and programming...)

It's been around for a while at this point and I have no recent memories of *seeing* complaints of more bugs...

I never used it myself though, so I can't say for certain... You could always try making a new account & toying around with it there for a bit to see if you have any problems...

Its per account? I thought it was everything including the application folder... my memory is foggy on this one.

No, it is only one's Home folder.

I've had it active since 10.3 came out and to my doorstep, and I've never had any serious problems. One recurring problem, however, is that some small settings are reset when I reboot--the 'recent items' reverts to default (instead of my 20 apps, 0 docs setting), and some menu bar items are removed. I don't know if this is related to file vault, however.

cool. thanks.

maybe i will move my mp3s out of my home folder to save some filevault processing...

here's hoping 10.4 lets me choose exactly which folders to do.

I've been using it daily on my Powerbook G4. No problems. What I did to keep my home folder size down was to move my photo's and music libraries to "Shared" and link to them. That way, File Vault isn't wasting time or space compressing music file and photo's. Someone steals my PB and wants to see family photo's fine...but they won't be able to get to my personal data files!

The other thing I did to keep the size of the Home directory down was that I have a separate encrypted disk image call "Projects" that contain most of my working files. I mount that separately from the home directory and only when I need it. I usually copy the files I need for what I'm working on into the Home folder. This way I don't have to constantly mount the "Projects" file (less chance of corruption in case of power (battery) failure when mobile.

I use FileVault on my old 600MHz iBook, new 12" PowerBook (replaced iBook) and a 900MHz Blue & White G3 I use at the office. All work just fine and no discernible speed hit, even on the old iBook.

I like it on the laptops, as I feel less vulnerable should someone walk off with my machine.

Been using FileVault since it came out on my PowerBook 17" without a problem. Love the security.
