Hello,
New to the forums and pretty new to macs.
I am trying to change my HD Icon into that of a picture I have saved as a .jpg in my Pictures folder.
I know this is probably really basic, but could someone guide me thru this.
Many thanks!
Phil

1) Open the image in Preview
2) Choose "Copy" from the Edit menu
3) Open new Finder Window
4) From the "Go" menu, select "Go to Folder..."
5) Type "/" in the dialog and hit return
6) When the drives come up, click once on the drive you want to apply the icon to
7) From the File menu choose "Get Info"
8) click once on the icon
9) Choose Paste from the Edit menu
Voila.

sadly this doesn't work.. all's good up to the 'pasting'.
i think because the image is a .jpg it won't allow it to be an icon.
is there a specific file format i need to convert the image to and how would i go about that? i have photoshop cs...
thanks!

Sadly, this still hasn't worked. I can paste the newly formed icon onto any other file or folder EXCEPT the Hard disk!
Are there some settings I should be changing somewhere along the route with the HD maybe? I dunno...
Cheers for peoples help!

You have to be logged into an account with admin privileges to change the hard drive icon. That's because users don't have write access to anything outside of their home folders.

Try repairing permissions? Use /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app to repair the permissions of your startup drive.

Yeah, you'll find that whenever you ask for help, the first question you'll get is "Did you repair permissions?" It's this century's "Try rebuilding the desktop."
