Hey'ya. My Finder has been acting up as of late. I did a search and couldn't find anything about this.
After a restart, my Finder has begun to take between :47 and :56 seconds to load AFTER my own user has been logged in, i.e. Log in Window-->Default Screen whilst loading *user"-->My own DT Pic pops up-->then Dock launches, my User Name, Clock, Airport Meter, and Battery Indicator open in 5-10 secs., then my Finder won't load for another 40 or 50 after that.
There's no beach ball, however.
I'm running 10.3.3 with a 1 GHz 1GB TiBook.
Things I've done...empty caches with Panther Cache Cleaner/Cocktail, repaired permissions and disk utility from another boot drive, fsck, and deleted my Finder preferences for all users. Absolutely nothing new has been installed since well before it started acting quirky, and it's happening in both my Users.
It's still jacked. Any ideas? Thanks.

Interesting. The only other thing I could suggest would be to try Updating Prebindings with Cocktail, or whatever.

Does the Finder load slowly on other accounts as well? If so, a reinstall may be in order. On the other hand, if you're experiencing system wide slow down your RAM could be bad - when my module failed it brought my Mac to a crawl.

He stated it happens with both users. I see the Finder slow to load using Konfabulator and when I used WeatherPop.
What do you have for start-up items, if anything? Have you checked your system logs for any clues?

I don't have any Start Up items in my "Start Up Items" in the Sys. Preferences. However, I do have some APE apps running: Window Shade, Clear Dock, etc. They have never been an issue before, but perhaps something has changed. I'll turn all of the APE stuff off and try again to see if that's the deal.
I'm also ignorant as to the systme logs and what they mean. Here's the last couple lines after (what I think) the system is loading *me*. If anyone has any clues, that'd be righteous. Thanks for the replys!!

UPDATE: I just tried rebooting with the APE shizzle disabled to no avail. The Finder still took like :50 seconds to launch.
It's really not a super big deal as far as using my system, but I'm wondering if it's the early manifestation of some larger problem.
Any other ideas? I don't want to reload the OS if I can avoid it.
Thanks!

Look back in your logs again, see if the services are really disabled for your APE stuff. I would avoid using these enhancers. Clearly there is some amount of time being taken to prebind these. Since I reboot only when required, I never pay attention to reboot times, but can understand the desire for a fast boot.
Do you have file sharing turned on, or have some automount of recent servers going on?

Remove all the fonts from /Library/Fonts and ~/Library/Fonts and reboot.
I installed all of the Adobe Fonts from the FontFolio package and had this exact same issue. I removed most of the fonts (around 1000 families) and startup times were back to almost nothing. I don't know what the finder is doing on launch, but it seems to be scanning fonts for some reason during the process.

Yeah. From looking at the logs, I'd say try removing the APE framework and see if that fixes anything.

I realize that this is an old thread, but I found out something very important about this issue. If you have recently changed your network configuration, so that you're connecting to the Internet in a different way, it may cause the Finder to take a substantial amount of time to launch. My cable modem went down recently, forcing me to switch to dial-up (blech!). My Ethernet configuration was still active, and my G5 still saw my router, however. I suddenly started having the slow Finder launch issue described in this thread. When I added a new location and turned on only the modem port (using Network Port Configurations), I no longer had the problem.
