In the Tiger thread I said there would be a new camoflage feature:
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...p;pagenumber=1
Quote: There's a new camoflage feature to Expose. You can make windows fade in and out now and set the level of transparency.
And now Apple has filed a patent for just that:
Apple files patent on translucent windows.
Apple has recently filed a patent for translucent windows that automatically adjust the opacity as information is updated (or not updated): "overlaid, Information-bearing windows whose contents remain unchanged for a predetermined period of time become translucent. The translucency can be graduated so that, over time, if the window's contents remain unchanged, the window becomes more translucent. In addition to visual translucency, windows according to the present invention also have a manipulative translucent quality. Upon reaching a certain level of visual translucency, user input in the region of the window is interpreted as an operation on the underlying objects rather than the contents of the overlaying window."

The feature is basically auto-hide. Instead of haviing to hit command-H you can choose for apps to fade out of view - like a Tiger in long grass.

Prior art "FocusLayer"?
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10347
"FocusLayer places a translucent layer between it and all other windows behind the front most window. This can make it easier to tell what you're doing when there are a lot of windows open."

Thats fugly and different. The new feature should make background windows fade away so you can see files on the desktop for example. That way you dont have to hit command-H for several open applications.

If I did they'd be several years ahead by now...but I'm not sure if Steve Jobs could stand me bossing HIM around. I'm not a yes-yes man.

You never did have to hit command-H for several applications. Command+Option+H will hide all other open applications (besides the one that has focus). Command+Option + click on dock icon (or desktop) works too.

Right .. F11 for expose pulling all the windows out of the way temporarily. But I understood RooneyX to be talking about the true "hide" function (command+H) where and app is hidden and won't return (even "behind" the window with focus) unless it is manually selected. I was just pointing out to him that command+option+H will achieve that en masse. Not exactly the same thing as F11

Apparently you didn't read the patent.
It's nothing like what you were talking about.

Isn't MS using something like this in the next version of Office for Mac? I'm positive they demoed something like this for the formatting palette during one of Jobs' keynote speeches.

Hmm, I'm recalling something like that too. It was a semi-transparent workspace used for some reason. Can't remember.
