This is the strangest problem I have ever seen on OSX. The second time.

I am doing nothing special on "X", just checking email, chatting with some friends and suddenly everything locks up. I can move the mouse, but nothing else is working. I tried to put the computer to sleep, but it would not do it. The screen turned dark, but I could hear the fan still working, and the little LED (on my PowerBook) would not start blinking...so I knew that it was not sleeping.

This happened to me the second time. The only way to get out of it, was to hold down the Power button and do a hard reset. Has anyone experienced this?

Yup. It's happened at some point or another on virtually all versions of OS X. As always, verify your hardware, verify your drive directories, etc...

This has not happened to my PowerBook since I have bought it...I have not changed anything since then...especially lately, when it occured at first.

if you have an airport card, have you tried reseating it/making sure it firmly and securely in place? how about RAM? any info written to the system crash logs (although i doubt it in this case...)
