In my desperate, but so far useless, attempts to hook up my two macs to a Canon i950 printer connected to a DLink DP-G310 WLAN Print Server, I bumped into a problem. I'm pretty sure I have never been asked before, but now, for some reason, the CUPS web interface requires a username and password before allowing me to access the admin-page. I have tried every username and password I have ever used on my macs, but without results. What happened here, and what username are we talking about??
Also, I'm able to find the printer over LPR, AppleTalk, IPP and who knows what. However, I seem unable to force the macs to realize what kind of printer it is. I know this may be a long shot, and I'm pretty sure it actually won't work, but if anyone has ever tried anything similar, I'm all ears for any solutions or clues as to how this might work...

You need to enter your root username and password to access this page for Cups admin.
If you have root disabled you cannot use this page for printer administration, or if you do not have appropriate root access your hooped as well.

Odd, my CUPS web interface requires no password. I don't think it ever has.

I am pretty sure this was added in the April 5th security update. I bet you haven't installed that one yet.

Yes, I keep all my Macs up to date. It's not really a security issue, since CUPS only listens on lo0 by default.

You shouldn't need to use the CUPS interface at all. Just use Printer Setup Utility to add the printer.

Yeah, if life was that good... Unfortunately, neither my root username/password, my normal username/password, nor my assorted guesses helps out, and I'm pretty sure I have never had to enter these before to access the CUPS admin interface.
However, my biggest question would be; Is there a way to force OSX to accept my printer as a Canon i950, although it might not see it as that, but rather as a print server or something. Is this possible? It's supposed to support IPP, LPR and AppleTalk protocols, but I'm all lost as to whether this is actually possible.
...the experiment goes on
