The combination of Share My Desktop and Chicken of the VNC works fine for me over Firewire. I din't try over Internet, but would assume it would be too slow to be usable.

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I've used VNC over the Internet. It's kind of annoying, but not unusable. You just need a little patience.
Timbuktu is probably better, though (haven't tried it myself).

VNC is far from ideal, but it works. I still have issues with copy-and-paste, though. Mac OS 10.3 comes with Apple Remote Desktop built-in (you can download it for 10.2), but you'll need the ARD software (non-free) to connect to another Mac.
Otherwise, there's always secure shell (ssh), though it isn't graphical.

Why not just use Apple Remote Desktop?

Because it's designed for LAN use, not internet, and it's not free, and it's really designed for lab monitoring, not one-on-one remote access. Timbuktu does a MUCH better job than anything else for that.
