uninstalling in os x

how do i uninstall applications in os x?
especially how do i uninstall big ones liek photoshop cs, ms office, halo, and other large programs.
also will there be leftover files, like in some library or preferences folders? i cant figure out how to cleanly uninstall.

If the program comes with an uninstaller, use that. Otherwise, you pretty much just throw it in the trash and empty. Some library or preference files may be left behind if you throw it away but they should be rather harmless if the app itself is gone. Also, most major programs put their extras in clearly labeled folders in the user and system libraries (for example, open up your User/Library/ folder and you'll see thing clearly labelled iTunes, Safari, etc.). Preferences in /Library/Preferences/ are usually clearly marked as well (com.adiumx.adiumx.plist for example for the program adium x). Not that hard really ... and usually not really even that important.

99% of the time, you just need to drag the app to the trash.
The only time an uninstaller might be necessary is if you installed the app using an installer. In these cases, the installer you used to install the app usually has an uninstall option.
We should make an FAQ for this forum for questions like this that come up a lot.
