Hi guys,

I recently tried to help my comp arts teacher install OS X on an OS 9 machine. The first time, I came in, and she had attempted a 10.2 install. The machine was stuck on the boot screen, so I force restarted, did a disk check, then tried archiving and installing over the previous installation. It seemed to work, the machine booted up, and we're stuck at a log in screen... with no users previously created. I messed up by checking "Preserve Users and Network Settings" because I had forgot the fact that she had never gotten to creating users the first time around... so now we can't log in. Any advice here?

Somehow mount that machine's hard drive onto a working Mac.

Then, navigate to /private/var/db on the sick drive and delete the file .AppleSetupDone

Upon reboot, it should run the setup assistant.

If it doesn't, something else is the problem.

Is the way to do that to connect the machine to another via firewire and start up in firewire target mode? I'm at home now, and can't try, but that I could probably do. And how the hell did you figure that out?
