Hey all, I just bought a 160gb external drive to use with my iBook G4 933. I have a 20gig MP3 collection now, and plan to start ripping my discs and then selling them (to pay for the drive). Here's the thing, I want to keep a chunk of good MP3s on my iBook that will go with me where I go (maybe the newest ones?), and the rest I want to keep on the external drive for use when I'm home.

Now, I know I can't span the library across 2 drives (can I?), but I thought if I made the external hold the main library, then when I'm away I'll just get a bunch of "!"s and when I get home, they'll go back to being playable tracks, right?

Maybe keep a few gigs on the laptop, adding to them all the time, and when it gets to 4gig I can burn them to DVD and then move them over to the external. I don't know, I just need some ideas.

What do you guys with a ton of tunes do?

I think if you turn off the option that has itunes organize your music for you, then having some songs on a different drive should? work.

Sounds like you're on the right track. As long as you can deal with the "missing songs" while you're not at home hooked up to the external, then you should be alright. When you plug back in they should all play fine.

(this is one reason why I love my iPod, I hook it up and it is a 2nd library that I can play directly from)

You're insane. Why would you do that? You'll be left with the compressed music. And no backup. If something happens to your drive you lose all your music. I think there are better ways to fund the hard drive.
