Howdy
In windows when I wanted to get a ping status I would type "ping www.whatever.com" and then I would get 4 ping times and then an average time etc. By typing another command I could trace the hops as well.
Now Im guessing that you can do this in Terminal? I tried it and it just kept pinging (i quit it at 44 reports!) WHat kind of commands do you use in terminal (if terminal is the right program to use) to get a ping report and hop report?

Cheers

Going from memory here, but I believe you'll want things to look like this:

Code:
ping -c 4 www.apple.com
As for the hops, it's traceroute instead of tracert in Windows.

If you're set on using the Terminal, try typing "ping -c 4 -q www.whatever.com"

For more, type "man ping"

Apple included a gui app to it called Network Utility inside of /Applications/Utilities/ , has an interface for several other commonly used utils
