all that i have that connects our computers together is that we use the same switch on our ethernet connection, so can i use that ethernet connection to be able to share printers?

Yeah.
I share the Printer plugged into my housemates PC downstairs over our home LAN. It's very easy to do.
Is it 2 macs you're doing it to or 1 mac and 1 PC? Is the printer connected to your computer or the other one?
I'd recommend going into system preferences -> sharing and checking the help page for printer sharing. Or, if you tell me the setup, I can tell you how to do it

the other computer is the one with the printer, both are macs with panther 10.3.3 on them. they both use the same ethernet switch, so maybe there is a way to do it over that...

On the mac that has the printer connected:
Apple Menu->System Preferences
Sharing
Turn on Printer Sharing
That's it. You're done. You don't have to do anything special on the other one. When you print, the printer shows up in the printer list under the rendezvous submenu.
