hallo friends i am new mac user! i have a question about multi-tasking in mac os x. i see the macintosh handles multi tasking fantastically, i use lots of programs simultaneously with no major problems!
is it ok to burn a dvd (data, not idvd) while i am doing other things, like watching a long quicktime movie and downloading files from intermet?
i remember with my windows compupers if i was burning a cd doing other things was a no-no because the cd would always fail and not write properly. i am paranoid that burning a data dvd will also get corrupt if i am doing these other things like mentioned before. is it ok in mac os x?
my friend tells me that if you encode/burn a dvd in iDVD it is not good to multi task but he is not sure with a regular data cd or dvd. i would like to do other things while i burn and not just wait. please halp

If it's an internal CD or DVD burner it should be ok.

I have a 15" PowerBook with 1 1/4 gigs of RAM and I can multi-task while burning just fine.

It should be no problem. Heck if you have two burners, you can burn multiple discs whiles doing other things.

It's quite fine. I do it all the time. Hell if I had to wait while burning like I do on My PC i'd never get anything done.

I do this all the time on the my 12" powerbook as well. I set the speed to auto or max (I can't recall what apple labels it), so if it needs to, it can slow down and not ruin the disc. However, it seems to slow down too much and a 5 minute burn turns into 10 or 15. I haven't tried (with a CD) setting it to 16x and then doing other things to see how it faired, but I think it would be ok.

Either that or you can use Toast. You can burn without taking the hit when using Toast.

If it's an internal burner you should be fine. FireWire burners are a little more risky, but should be OK. Don't try it with a USB burner, though.

Can I help you fix your PC? It shouldn't have a problem burning a DVD while doing something else.

It's not that I have a problem doing more than one thing at once while burning. It's just that it's not as good as OS X in doing more things at once.

and don't jostle your powerbook while burning. this will reduce the risk of burning coasters.

With the advent of buffer underrun prevention, it's really not a problem. also the "not jostling" and "if it's an internal drive" both make good sense.
you should be fine; i do it all the time as well

Risky? My LaCie external at home works fine since 10.1 burning CDs. In fact, I am burning right now with an external LaCie FW drive at work of images on the server. I routinely create Archive CDs and DVDs and my coaster rate is less than 2%.
Any modern burner will have buffer under-run protection, so you can multitask all you want without any problems.
