I went to Apple Store and Genuis Bar expert was stumped. 2 of my PB500s would no longer authenticate Dial up. I have Cable modem, but use Mindspring on travels. Modem would connect and negotiate speed and report connected in Network status but still say "authenticting" in menu bar. We finally proved it was OS X.3.4 problem, since both PBs would work on an external 10.3.3 firewire drive.

We tried deleting prefs, repairing permissions and even copying some files in terminal to no results!


I finally solved problem by reinstalling OSX.3 and downloading all updates.

Didn't loose any info, but there may be a problem lurking!

I also had a problem with my internal modem. After the restart, I couldn't dial at all... I went through my Network preferences, and it noted that the modem was installed but not configured (red dot), and when I tried using the Network Setup Assistant, it had the Internal Modem grayed out, as if it didn't even exist. Another restart fixed it though, for whatever reason.
