Hi,
Today, with 10.3.4, I formatted my drive and installed every single possible update and everything just works™.
I want to build a backup image that contains this "clean" system from wich I can restore if anything goes wrong in the future (and store it on a DVD).

I think I've read here on how to do this, but I couldn't find specific instructions.
Can anyone point me as to what software should I use ?

Carbon Copy Cloner ?
Disc Utility ?

Thanks

I do this all the time at work.

I use Disk Util with Panther since CCC failed for me in the past. Maybe it's better now, but given a choice between an Apple util and a third-party one, I'll choose Apple's.

Anyway, it's easy, but you HAVE to boot from another partition or your Panther CD for the image to be clean.

Simply run Disk Util, select the partition you want to back up (I don't choose the device, I choose the partition that's UNDER the device name).

eg:

WESTERN DIGITAL 120GB
> Panther <-- I choose this one.

I create a compressed image. You could use a different kind. I've had problems with a read-only partition when re-imaging it where the machine wouldn't recognize it as bootable, so use compressed or read/write.

The problem I had with restoring the image is that for some reason, Disk Util will fail if doing the restore isn't the VERY FIRST thing you do on you Mac after a reboot. I have no idea why, and I've posted this in the Apple support discussions with no responses. I even have to make sure that the Utilities folder is open when the machine reboots because just doing that causes the failure. It's bizarre.
