Updated my DP533 with 10.3.4 and at some point it hung. Left it for about an hour (my iBook had finished way before then) and the screen was just black so I did a hard restart.

Now when booting I just get a grey screen with the spinny grey lines.

Any ideas? I really don't want to wipe the drive....

I'm not sure. When I updated my iBook today, I left it while it was downloading and came back to it a few hours later. The screen was off, however it wasn't sleeping. I assumed it had shut itself down, so I held down the on button, but then I heard it turn itself off. I turned it on and my LCD was all shimmery and it took AGES to get past the grey screen. Now after a reboot or two it seems back to normal, although my wallpaper image does look slightly shimmery.

Boot from OS X Install Disk and repair with Disk Utility. Or - with DiskWarrior if you've got one.

Either way, you will not need to wipe out. If nothing works, reinstall 10.3 using "Archive and Install" option and then apply 10.3.4 Combo update.
