mail.app and ichat.app dont seem to want to open anymore.

i had a KP when installing, i think it was in the middle of the optimizing at the end of the install. i dont remember what else i was doing.

disk utility on the panther discs seems to think that nothing is wrong and diskwarrior craps out on me when replacing files. (error 2168).

is there a list of the error messages for diskwarrior somewhere?

i can boot up fine and the majority of things work, but not having mail and ichat is a bit of pain in my butt. i find it odd that ichat doesn't want to work as the update didnt even touch it. proteus works fine in the place of iChat.

anyone else in the same boat?

Download the combo updater. It is big but worth it. Plus, you won't lose connection during install.

You may have to remove the updater you just tried from the receipts folder.

Computer>Library>Receipts

yeah, i have run the 41mb update from software update, and then i dl'ed it from apple themselves (only 39mb ). ill try the combo update. that might work.

thought about the reciepts, but i didnt do anything with it.

yup did that too. only thing is that now iTunes doesn't want to play either.

updating permissoins just gives me that one permission deep in the system. (think its been documented)

Yeah, the CD one? Damn, dude. Not sure what else there is to try. Tough it out. Maybe someone will have better idears.

After cloning my OS onto a new hard drive, I had address book failure, it would just open and crash. Long story short: Tinkertool gave me an error message concerning system fonts so I used fontbook to resolve duplicates, (although some had to be deleted - I kept the originals, some had been given a -1 suffix).

Also, the combo update is 79Mb, not 41. Probably worth getting that.

update: itunes now works. but safari doesn't load a window

mail and ichat are still toast. finally got DW to work for me, and that didnt do too much.

pulled ichat and mail outta the panther disk with pacifist to no avail.

turned off all of my unsanity stuff, and reverted back to aqua. disabled all the font changes with tinkertool.

turned off almost everything third party i had going.

zapped the pram. nada.

been repairing permissions like nobodys business. but nothing doing.

oh, and i have downloaded and installed both the 39mb and the 79mb updates.

so, now im using firefox on a damn fast system. kinda nice not having all those haxxies bogging me down.

ill get by, but this is pretty damn annoying. too bad my ipod is so damn full of music, or i would just clone my drive over there and wipe the damn thing.

It may be worth doing a finder search for any spare copies of safari lying around. Maybe a wrong one got updated? Also, the newer versions won't work without java 1.4.2, although earlier ones would. A friend of mine lost safari by updating it from a magazine disk without updating Java first.

She's on dial-up and didn't want the long wait without a phone.

safari is back in action. good thing im such a bag lady about my installers. reinstalled safari 1.2 and im good to go.

still no dice with ichat and mail. all the other iApps work fine. WHAT THE CRAP IS GOING ON HERE!

anyone know if i download the panther.3 installer if that will revert me? i doubt it, but am i facing any huge risks doing that?

If you installed the combo I can't imagine what going back to dot 3 would do. I doubt it would help.

ok, finally back in action.

saved the log from the update installer, saw that two things were going on-

first that the english.lproj file in the webkit was not installing for some reason. (why safari still worked is still a bit of a mystery to me.)

after a little hunting around with pacifist. (GODDAMN I LOVE THAT APP, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU TO THE AUTHOR.) i found the right language file to install, and the correct framework to install ('twas in the ichat 2.1 update installer)

so, im back in action. moral of the story, when you are updating/installing, DO NOT do anything else, because if you KP youre fucked. oh, and being a bag lady with installers is good policy.

does anyone know why safari still worked?
