You could build better for cheaper, more likely. And I wasn't gonna buy you an AlienWare machine, but if you just want to give me the G5, that's cool. "Pay it forward" kind of deal.

Yeah, not the best choice for just sitting around and playing games. A better choice for pretty much everything else, though, in my opinion. Sell the G5 and build your own gaming machine if that's all you really want to do. Screw Alienware machines—you can build something way better for the money you get from selling that G5.

You know - A G5 will pretty much match almost any PC game to game. You may not get the HIGHEST numbers, but you'll get them way over the noticeable ones.

Well, then PLEASE just sell your G5 to somebody who knows what the hell they're doing, and who will appreciate the G5 for its productivity and its OS, and get yourself a ****ing Xbox.

Best solution for kids like you, IMO.

Its too bad the processors in that G5 will smack down the processor in that Alienware.

When the Mac gets the GeForce 6800 world order will be once again restored.

I think Alienware is being misrepresented as the only platform for digital video/audio, art, and gaming. The reason I say this is because a lot of upcoming artists are pouring their cash towards an Alienware pc and just as always declaring the competition (Apple, Sun..etc) as utter crap. Maybe these are your friends or someone you've known for a long time. Maybe there is an employee who is stalking from cubicle to cubible with a fully loaded semi-automatic machine gun waiting for you to trade in your G5 and Bang! your dead.

Like others have said you can build your own.

Seriously, if you received this from your parents you ought to tell them that you appreciated their gift but you have to trade it/sell it for something that fits your needs.

Since you hate that G5 so much and it is so terrible, I'd be glad to take it off your hands for you so you can be rid of it. I mean, it's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it, right?

Man you only buy Alienware if your a total newbie.

I could hop on newegg.com and destroy any of Alienware configurations for 65% of it's cost. That company is a farce.

You DON'T buy gaming PCs..you build them with your own hands. You tweak that last %10 of speed from them. Walking to a frag fest with an Alienware is like the Weekend Warrior on a Harley pretending to be a Hell's Angels.

Then buy a BOXX computer which will kick the ar$e off the G5 in any meaningful test.

What order? In what area? From what I see, and use, the Mac is sorely losing the field in the graphics market just now. Just my opinion, and that's me speaking as a Mac user.

Nah it won't.

But if he does upgrade the video card he'll still be able to play all the best games at highest res. If he can even get the best games on the Mac.

But hey, his parents got him a G5. It's free, why complain?

I agree with hmurchison2001 that you are suppose to build a gaming machine but if you really want to buy a pre-configured computer for gaming my bet is Falcon Northwest.

Yes it can. Just very, very, very slowly, and with no sound, and no usefulness...

To some extent sure. But there is a big issue I have with Mac gaming, and it isn't an issue that can be solved by the Mac comminuty. Mac to PC compatibility and release schedules. For the most part, Mac users are lucky to see a game on the shelves by the time the PC version has moved on to an expansion. So if it does support cross platform network play, well, the other side has already moved on to newer things. And then, you get the games that can't even talk to the PC side. C&C Generals and Everquest just to name two. I play computer games these days for the multiplayer experience, and I play my console games for the single player experience.

Apple seriously needs to buy up all the Mac Game porting houses, and get the expertise from the WineX team. With a combination of the porting experience, and the possibility of running Direct X natively on OS X, the gaming scene would be changed drasticially. Native Direct X? Well Darwine has WINE already running as a native PPC application, now the WineX stuff just needs to be brought over to allow an easier porting solution. That, and Apple really needs to try and push more developers to just build a cross platform solution initially. Blizzard is at the top of my list for releasing hybrid games, along with Ubisoft for some. Epic is kinda there, though pushing the Mac version out via a seperate publishing house and not having a hybrid disc in the box was a bit irritating,

Anyhow, to change the direction of this a bit, it doesn't matter if the G5 can outpreform the competition. People wern't abandoning the Mac in mass when it was slower then the PC world. Why? Well, people here run a Mac because they can get work done, and probably prefer OS X to Windows. I choose OS X for my production platform, but I will continue to choose Windows for my computer gaming platform.

Can I install and run Windows apps with Darwine yet? If not how's it coming along? The site has incomplete documentation and the FAQ link is broken.

Perhaps your parents were extra smart for buying a Mac.

Hmmm, so you can't play games until the wee hours of the night with your anti-social friends...

They have Wine fully ported over, meaning all the Windows APIs Wine supports are now running natively on PPC. The current process is now to bind this to an x86 emulator to allow normal Windows applications to run. This will be better then VirtualPC for the fact that so much of the core APIs are not being emulated.

Right now, you can compile a Win32 application to run on Darwine. Basicially building a PPC Windows application, similar to back when Windows NT existed on PPC.

WINE works. You can run Windows apps if they were recompiled for PPC. Unfortunately, WINE Is Not an Emulator, so you can't run x86 Windows apps yet. They're working on porting QEMU to OS X, so they'll have a working x86 emulator. It's not working yet, though.

Anyway, no emulator, regardless of how good it is (and QEMU looks quite nice, if they can get it working on Darwin) is going to match the speed of a physical x86 machine. So emulation really isn't a good option for games. If you want to play PC games, you need a PC. Which is why you're better off just giving the G5 to me.
