Hi...

I was diagnosing why my system wasn't auto-sleeping after the set time period and I discovered it was the Mail program.

I've always had Mail set to check for new mail every minute. But I seem to remember my system would go ahead and sleep anyways after the set 20 minutes or so. (It has been awhile since I had a chance to diagnose this, so I can't remember when this stopped working.)

In order to auto-sleep, do I need to have Mail check mail less frequent than my auto-sleep setting?

With Mail checking for new emails every couple of minutes your computer will not go to sleep or at least it shouldn't. You could set the times Mail checks for messages higher than the time you want your computer to sleep, that should work. Or just close Mail if you don't plan on using it or checking for messages for awhile and just let your computer go to sleep and check for new email once you wake it up again.

Actually, I think Mail prevents sleep even if it is not auto-checking. I have my PB G4 12" set to check mail manually and it won't go to sleep if Mail is open.

My Mail check setting is for 15 minutes and my machine sleep setting is set to about 10 minutes. The computer goes to sleep as expected even with Mail running.

hmmm... I don't have my computer set to sleep, but I wonder if this is why my screensaver never comes on since upgrading to Mac OS X 10.3.x?

I don't sleep my G5, but Mail never prevents the screensaver from kicking in, nor does it prevent the system from turning off the power to the display. At times, both my account and my wifes have Mail open and running. Both are set to check every 5 minutes. No problems.
