I created an encrypted disc image using disc utility and gave it a password. I copied some files into the image and then unmounted the image. Next, I burned the .dmg file using toast lite. I thought everything was fine, but when I inserted the disc, I could mount the image and access the contents without being prompted for a password. I like using toast b/c It does a great job of writing sessions. Using disc utility I always seem to end up writing to the disc once and never again.

Note: I tried to do the same thing with disc utility to see if it is a software issue, but DU tells me the disc is not appendable, even though it clearly is according if I use Toast. and I don't have another disc right now...grrrrr...

You'll have to burn the image file itself to a disk, not the image (if that makes sense). Did Toast prompt you for a password before burning the disk? It should have, or there's a really big hole in the encrypted disk security.

Unless the password was in the keychain of course...

The password is not in the keychain and Toast did not prompt me for a password; I should have suspected something was not right.

What do you mean, I needed to burn the image file, not the image. I burned the .dmg file. What else could I have burned? I'm afraid I don't understand.

Thanks!

If you dragged the .dmg file to the toast window it should remain encrypted. If you dragged the contents of the dmg it would not be encrypted.

Usually when someone says they 'burned the image' they mean the contents of the image. I'm talking about burning the image file itself to the disk. So when you open the disk in the Finder all you see in the image file. Then you open that to get your encrypted contents.
