When i play a mp3 filer in the Finder, it uses about 80-90% of my CPU on a 233 iMac! The same file uses about 16% CPU in the application mpg123 with its GUI called MU! Thats a HELL of a diffrence! How come Apple cant optimize their mpeg-decoding just a BIT? iTunes also uses most of the CPU on the same machine. Its quite redicilous...

One of my friends has a 2.0 Ghz PIV, and a mp3 file played in WinAmp uses 0-1% of his CPU. Why the incredible big diffrence?

I didnt buy this iMac just to use it as an mp3 player.. its almost not capable of doing anything else at the same time...

iTunes doesn't use that much CPU if you close all its windows. It don't mean hiding it or minimizing it. Close the window and let it run without the window.
Sound Enhancer and Equalizer also consume CPU so you might want to turn them off as well.

As with regard to the Finder, I think Apple has more urgent things to do than optimizing mp3 previewing - like making previewing bug free first for example.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I have to agree.

I work with lots of audio though, and it is an annoyance.

Me too, its pretty annoying...

After all, Id rather see a bug-fix/optimize 10.x release, than major new features....

16% of 233 is 37mhz
1% of 2ghz is 20mhz.

Arguably the PIV does more work per cycle than the G3. The P4 definitely has a superior motherboard and ram, so this isn't very surprising. WinAmp is more efficient than iTunes, but is it doing as much? Also make sure you're comparing similar files. It takes more CPU to play a 192kbps MP3 than a 128kps MP3.

As for the finder and iTunes, I've always found the exact opposite. On my 1.5ghz PB, iTunes averages 6-8% CPU while playing with it's windows open, the finder uses less than 3% playing mostly 128-160kbs AAC file.
