I have a g3 b/w 350mz 2 internal 80 gig drives the system drive is a 7200rpm the slave an 80 gig 5400rpm.

I have an external 6 gig firewire drive that has been zeroed and I want to do a clean osx install on it.

So I am Unsure about how to proceed, should I use cloner or should I disconnect my internal system drive then install from cd osx intaller ?

Not sure why you're considering disconnecting your internal drive... what would that achieve?

Why not just insert the installer CD, and install onto the external drive? It will ask you which drive you want to install on.

Sorry, but I get really nervous about things.

Especially when the installer says reboot and press c

it feels as if its automatically going to set about reinstalling my intact system and I only want to do this if I really have to just now ?

It will reboot from the CD and start up Installer. The first thing Installer will do is ask you what volume you want to install OS X on. Don't choose the one that already has OS X and it won't install there. (I don't think it would actually reinstall over your existing system anyway, although I've never tried.)

Yeah, you can reinstall on top of an existing installation - that's the procedure people have employed to fix broken systems, and it often works quite well in OS X (as opposed to the classic Mac OS). But the OP should not fear - the installer would never install anything anywhere without prompting the user first.

Not if the version of the OS on the drive is newer than the one on the install CD, which is usually the case.
