I just upgraded to 1.25 GB of RAM to try to avoid dreaded pageouts. But while the amount of times the book actuallly pagesout has been reduced, anytime I open a program (cold start) and immediatly switch to another program already running in the backround I get a page out (90- 100). I thought now that I got this amount of RAM that there would be no more PO's. Is this normal. TOP command shows and ample 850 MB still available.

Some pageouts are to be expected (and are unavoidable). You have nothing to worry about.

I'm seeing the same thing. I've got an AL 1.5 with 1gb of RAM and I get a large number of page outs as well. More than my 12" PB with 768MB of RAM and more than my Dual 500 with 1.5gb of RAM (both with identical user set ups). It's still the fastest system I own, but I do log out when I get more than 1gb of swap space being used (4 or more swap files), which is about every 4-5 days. I currently have an uptime of 13hrs and already have 5645 page outs. Now that's only using Safari, iTunes (though I did import a bunch of CDs today), Mail, Text edit, Quicksilver, menucalendar, and menumeters. Once I start getting into the Photoshop/Dreamweaver/Flash...etc, that number will increase several fold.

Pageouts are a fact of life with a VM system. If you use your computer enough, you'll page out, no matter how much RAM you have. Stop worrying about it and get some work done!
