Hi chaps,

So I bought a LaCIE 320 Gb hard drive today and it seems to be working fine. However, permissions for the volume are set to

Owner:me
Group:Unknown

I want to change the group to staff but no matter what I try to change the group to it reverts back to Unknown.

I've tried both command line methods and the finder get info box.

If I log in as root and try the same it gives me an error message which I think was -60003

I ran disk warrior over my startup drive and it had a whole host of problems which it seems to have now fixed but I still can't change the group permissions on my new volume.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

On a side note, something I thought was weird, I tried logging in as root (as I knew I had enabled ages ago) and I was guessing the password, it came up with a password hint that I knew was a hint I had written (I still couldn't remember the password so a fat lot of use the hint was) but when I checked, root wasn't actually enabled.

And when I come to think of it, this hint must have been created in Jaguar (I did an upgrade and install). Wait, why would I have created a password hint for root? I don't think I would have!?

Anyway that was a bit odd and i'm babbling but if anyone has any help with the former question I'd be most grateful.

Cheers,

Carpetfluff

o.k,

I'm dumb, sorry, I figured out that 'ignore ownership on this volume' was checked and that was preventing the changes.

Sorry to bother everyone, please let me sink to the bottom as I can't delete the post.
