Hi,

I've been running off the factory install of X on my new PB. I would like to do a reinstall of 10.3.3 (3.4 has been buggy), but all that came with the PB was a Restore disk. Is this the same as my purchased 10.3 disk or will it just restore the same old factory configuration without allowing me to customize the installation?

Anyone know?

It's likely that the retail 10.3 disks will not work on your PowerBook if the machine was released after the retail 10.3 was released. You can use the restore disk to reinstall just the operating system.

The way the restore disk works is that first you run the operating system installer (it is on the disk), and then you run a separate program (if you wish) to reinstall the remaining default applications.

Also, if you're going to reinstall, you might try applying the 10.3.4 update anyway. I have found that many people who have problems with the software updates don't seem to have them after a fresh reinstall. I know it creates more work, but it's worth a shot.

Besides the security update released yesterday needs 10.3.4, if I'm not mistaken.

I did a fresh install with my iBook G4 restore DVD today. I was hoping I would have the option somewhere along the way to not install all the extra languages. All I need is English and German. Is there any way I can remove all the other stuff? When you only have a 27gb HD you take all you can get!

Very odd ... why doesn't the Retail version work on new PowerBooks? and why no installer options on the Restore disk?

Pretty anoying having to go through and delete all the drivers, languages, and software items i don't want.

No other options?

The install options are on the Restore CD/DVDs too. The installer is exactly the same as the retail version.

The current PowerBooks require newer drivers that are not present in 10.3. This is nothing new. Macs have always required the version of the OS that was currently available at the time of release.
