Yes, an iMac 333 will run OS X. You should definitely consider upgrading the RAM though, because it makes a substantial difference in speed.

yeah, more ram for sure. and while you will be able to install and run os x and choose whether you boot in os x or 8.5, if you want to run your old apps in os x's "classic" mode you'll need to upgrade that 8.5 install to 9.x too.

I'm running panther on an iMac 333.
Surfing is OK and using iTunes.
I wouldn't make it my primary Photoshop machine, but it's OK.

Another thing to consider - how big is your hard drive, and how much space do you have left on it? Personally, I wouldn't recommend anything less than 10GB... you can get away with less (e.g. 6GB), but you will probably end up filling it fairly rapidly if you use things like iPhoto etc. and if you don't have enough physical memory (due to paging of memory from RAM to the hard disk).
If you can afford it, another relatively cheap and good upgrade for older machines and OSX is a faster and bigger hard drive. This site has the various Apple service manuals for all mac models available for download so you can find out how to safely take your machine apart to upgrade it.
