Hi!

I'd like to know if you have heard any reports about Powermac G4s becoming louder after applying the Security Update 2004-06-07? This happened on my PowerMac G4/MDD 1250 (single cpu). The fan started running on full speed after a reboot, but settled down to the original as soon as the system was bootet (I think it was as soon as the grey Apple logo appears, don't remember exactly, though). Same thing after a second reboot. I swear it was never like this before, I had thought only on the Powermac G5 the fans would spin at full speed until being throttled back by the system.
At first I thought it might be a coincidence that it first happened after the Security Update. I had not rebooted for a few days, and in the meantime summer has hit Germany (where I live), so I thought it might just be because of the temperature. But then again, a rise in temperature should result in a higher fan speed AFTER the system throttled it back, while the speed at the beginning of the startup should be the same (since it's full speed), shouldn't it? And again, I'm absolutely sure the fans have never been that loud before.
It's not really a problem, because I don't reboot that often, but nevertheless I'd like to know what the cause might be, and if others are affected. I posted this in a German forum, and so far one person confirmed he had the same problem. Are there any others here?
BTW, I'm using MacOS X 10.3.4.
Thanks!

This update updates Safari, Terminal, the DiskImageMounter app and LaunchServices. The first three are just applications that don't run unless you launch them, and the last one really hasn't anything to do with fans.

It's the weather.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I had the exact same issue with a dual G4 867 Mhz Tower. Very odd. I haven't rebooted since the post update reboot though.

Try resetting the PMU button. It helped with my Dual GHz G4.

Thanks for your answers!
It took three reboots for me to disappear, but now it seems to be back to normal. Let's hope it doesn't reappear as suddenly as it disappeared...

To be honest, I think it may be normal. I turn mine on/off every day. And I applied all the updates and I haven't really noticed a difference.

I'll keep an eye out on it next time I boot it up.

Check the grid of holes behind the bottom front handle ... mine love to completely cover over with dust and force the fan into a higher speed.

I have the exact same G4 model and the super-loud leaf blower fan has always kicked in for a short amount of time on restart if the temp in my room is high enough (which lately it has been). Luckily it never comes on any other time 'cause, damn it's loud.
