Currently running OS X 10.3.4 (7H63) on a 17 inch 1.33 GHz powerbook. Several times now the book fails to wake from sleep. The only way to get any response is to force a restart.

Any ideas why this is happening and is anyone having similar problems.

Thanks

Neil

Are you absolutely certain? I have noticed that if I my PB doesn't appear to wake up that if I close the lid and open it again, it will then wake up on the second attempt - I think it is because I am "bouncing" the lid by accident when I initially press the latch button which causes it to start and then immediately stop waking. I'm not saying that this is exactly what is happening with you, but just try closing the lid again first, leave it a few seconds and then reopen it to see if your PB will then re-awaken before forcing a restart.

Did you repair permissions following the update?

It's just happened today for the first time on my 1.33GHz 17" PB, too. Didn't think of closing and re-opening the lid, though…

I've seen the same behavior as JKT describes before. Sometimes closing the lid and re-opening would work, sometimes hitting the display brightness buttons or return would also help.

Now though, none of those remedies do anything. The last couple of times I've had to resort to the forced restart.

Will try the permission repair - is disk utilities the best program to use?

Yes, use Disk Utility. However, you may need to try resetting your PMU (power management unit). Apple KBase article on PMU

Is there an advantage to using Disk Utility as opposed to entering "sudo diskutil repairPermissions /" in the Terminal? Or is it exactly the same with a nice(r) GUI?

After any update .. Repair permissions: Close all files and applications on the disk you want to repair. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and double click it. Then select your hard drive in the left panel and First Aid at the top. Then click on "Repair Permissions." It will take a few minutes.

Try these energy saver settings ..
Preferences/Energy Saver
"Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for" .. at Never
Check "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".

I've had this happen several times with my 15" PB. For me it always happens if I pull out my USB mouse with the lid closed. When I open the lid later the computer's dead. This probably happens 1/10 times.

As for repairing permissions, I find less and less that there are any problems with installers. Back in the day it seemed like every application install or update revealed a ton of permission errors. I can't remember the last app or update that needed permissions repaired.

I have repaired permission and will see if that helps. I didn't reset the PMU - will try that if the problem isn't solved.

Thanks for all your help.

This happens to me occasionally on my PB 15"...I have noticed that it tends to happen more when the battery is low. When it happens, I can get it to wake up by closing the lid, plugging in the charger and waiting about five minutes.

When it is in this disabled state, pressing the battery charge indicator on the bottom of the unit results in a single blinking LED.

Well that was kinda scary.

I reset the PMU and rebooted the PB.

Took a long time to boot, but then finally got to the desktop. A message said the clock was worng (to be expected) and that funny things may happen.

Went straight to the Time preferences and before I could do anything, a kernal panic happened.

Powered down the PB, waited 10 secs and rebooted.

PB was stuck at first grey creen for a while and the startup screen came on for a few seconds and then screen went into verbose mode.

Hung on Network search for a while, and then started going through the usual startup sessions.

Went back to blue screen. Mouse movable, but nothing else happening.

Powered down again. Waited 10 seconds. Rebooted.

Went through startup at nomral pace, clock set itself up properly and now everything seems normal.

What you guys think?
