thumbs.db is a file Windows XP makes when you view a folder under Thumbnail view. It's just a cache; you can delete it with no problems.

.DS_Store is a file Mac OS X makes when you view a folder using custom view settings. It stores the particular settings for the view of that folder; you can delete it safely, too.

will deleting ds_store will make me lose my custom settings for that fodler, such as background pic, icon size, order, etc??

True, but if you're dragging it into Toast, though, it probably won't matter anyway.
