Hi People

I will be getting a new Mac within the next month so i thought i would ask a couple of basic questions.

1) When you install the operating system do you have an option not to install certain programs such as IPHOTO and the like?

2) Regarding background maintenance tasks ive read you can do this via Terminal by typing one of the following

sudo periodic daily
sudo periodic weekly
sudo periodic monthly

Does this imply that i need to run all 3? or can i for example just do monthly? Any other info on this greatly welcomed.

1) iPhoto is installed by default. It can easily be moved to the trash.

2) Those script are run at startup and obviously (daily, weekly and monthly). The only time you may need to run them is if you keep your system on for VERY long periods of time in sleep mode. Sleep mode will not execute the scripts.

Also, I do believe there is an advanced (or custom) setting with regards to installing the OS. You may be able to select which applications are installed at that point.

If I recall correctly (IIRC) you can choose not to install certain iLife apps, in fact I believe this to be true.

As for the second question I wouldn't worry about it, I never run any of those tasks and my system is wonderful.
